The forehead is one of the most common places for wrinkles to form. While these wrinkles generally start off as small creases, they can eventually evolve into deep furrows. Can you get rid of these forehead lines? This post takes a look into some of the causes and possible treatments for a wrinkly forehead.
How do forehead lines form?
Forehead lines are formed from years of raising our eyebrows. Shock and surprise are two of the emotions that cause us to raise our eyebrows the most. Meanwhile, years of frowning can cause two vertical lines to form between the eyebrows (often known as ‘frown lines’).
Our skin naturally loses its elasticity as we get older, which can lead to permanent lines forming. Moisturizing daily may prevent this by helping to maintain some of this elasticity. It’s worth noting that stress, sun exposure and smoking can all speed up the development of forehead wrinkles too – all of these factors can cause our skin to lose its elasticity more quickly, leading to premature wrinkles across the face.
How can you get rid of forehead lines?
Forehead lines can be some of the deepest wrinkles on our face and are not easy to get rid of. However there are a number of possible treatments to look into.
Brow lift
Those willing to consider cosmetic surgery could consider getting a brow lift. This is a type of face lift that tightens the skin on the forehead in order to ‘iron out’ wrinkles. You can expect to pay several thousands of dollars for this surgery from a reputable clinic. The procedure has a high success rate and low recovery time, but may be too expensive and invasive for some people.
Botox
Botox is a non-surgical way to remove forehead wrinkles that involves injecting botulinum into the skin. This substance relaxes and effectively paralyzes the muscles in the forehead (when carried out successfully you should still be able to raise your eyebrows without forehead wrinkles forming). Botox is not a permanent solution to wrinkles – it typically has effects lasting three to four months, after which some people return for a top up. The price you would pay for Botox varies depending on how many units you need per treatment, but it is generally much cheaper than a brow lift (about $300 to $600 on average).
Laser resurfacing
Laser resurfacing involves removing the outermost wrinkled layer of skin with a laser. It can be effective against both fine lines and deep wrinkles. You’re looking to spend between $1000 and $3000 on this treatment. It has a high success rate and recovery time of about two weeks to a month.
Retinol
Retinol is an ingredient found in many over-the-counter anti-aging serums that has been proven to help reduce wrinkles. Retinol is unlikely to work against deep wrinkles, but could cause fine lines to fade. It is the cheapest and least invasive option – you can buy OTC products for less than $20 to apply at home. Prescription retinol can have more effective results but is not available to everyone and costs quite a bit more.
