Working from home is something that we’ve all had to get used to over the past couple of months. If you’ve been switched to a remote working position due to the global pandemic currently affecting the world, then there’s a good chance you’ve learned a couple of important lessons to help you work more efficiently when you return to the office.
In this post, we’ll be explaining some of those important lessons and how you can apply them to fit your workplace.
Make your work environment as organized as possible
The key to working efficiently from home is to focus on having an organized environment that is accessible. For example, you don’t want to spend too much time looking for certain work-related tools or materials, and you want to have complete control over where everything is so that you’re less likely to lose something or spend time searching for it.
Organization also helps when it comes to your digital work. For example, sorting work into specific folders so they’re easier to find can be a huge help for everyone involved in the project. It also helps if you set bookmarks for certain cloud-based services and web pages that you frequently visit so that you’re less likely to waste time searching for them or finding the right link in the future.
And of course, we can’t forget about physical organization. Whether it’s sorting documents in the right order or even having all of your tools in the right place, make sure you create a work environment in your office that helps you work quickly and efficiently. A productive office and work environment will drastically boost your productivity and make it a lot easier for you to get things done quickly and with the least room for error. It might take a day or two to really sort out your office and remove all the clutter, but it’ll make your day-to-day tasks much easier and more efficient.
So to summarize, here are the lessons you can apply:
- Keep your physical space organized so you’re less likely to waste time looking for something.
- Keep your digital workspace organized as well, such as keeping files in the right folders and bookmarking frequently-visited webpages.
- Ensure that you declutter your workspace so that you’re less likely to waste time looking for something in the future.
These simple tips will help improve your productivity in the workplace and help you stay focused.
Avoid distractions as much as possible
One of the biggest issues people face when working from home is that they usually get distracted. Whether it’s by things like their smartphone or other people in the home such as their children, it’s actually really easy to lose your train of thought when working from home. If you focus on balancing your career with other responsibilities, then you’ll have a bit more success when working from home. This is because you can prioritize what’s important at the time and give yourself more time to focus on your work.
In the office, it may be helpful to start focusing more on avoiding distractions, especially if you can identify the times where you’re most likely to stop working and lose focus. Some situations may include chatting to your work neighbor, or even being on your smartphone as you work. There are some situations where you might chat to colleagues for a long time when you take a break, and you might end up speaking to others in the office whenever you go get a drink.
Trying to avoid these situations as much as possible is perhaps the best way to avoid common distractions. By focusing on your work and identifying the situations where you’re most likely to waste time, you’ll have a much easier time focusing on your work and getting your job done. The key is to prioritize what’s important at the time (which is most likely your work) so that you can finish those tasks quickly and have time to relax afterwards.
In short, here are the points that we can apply to office work:
- Prioritize tasks in the workplace so you know where to focus and what you should be finishing first.
- Try to identify situations where you’re most likely to be distracted.
- Actively avoid those situations so that you can focus on your work and get things done as quickly as possible.
By following these simple tips, you’ll be much more productive at work and will finish your tasks sooner so you have more time to relax and take a break.
