Many people have the skills to be a teacher, but not the academic background. Others simply don’t want to teach a curriculum. In either case, your teaching skills needn’t go to waste just because you don’t want to follow an academic path. There are many other jobs that require you to educate people. Below are a few examples.
Private tutor
Private tutors are typically hired on a one-on-one basis. While private tutors can teach traditional academic subjects like maths and English, they can also teach other skills that may not necessarily require you to obtain teaching qualifications. For example, you could teach people how to speak another language without an academic focus (no textbooks or exams), or you could teach people how to play musical instruments without focusing on grades. Lessons could be taught in person or virtually via video conferencing. You could teach kids or you could teach adults.
Sports/fitness instructor
You may also be able to teach a sport or teach exercises to people. Such a job could be ideal for those that love a certain sport or love staying fit. Becoming a sports or fitness instructor does typically require some form of certification. This typically requires taking a course such as pilates instructor training. You can then host your own classes or take people one-on-one. Most sports/fitness instructors work out of a gym or leisure centre where it is easier to find new clients. However, you could start a class in a local park or even host classes virtually.
Business coach
Business coaches provide expertise to other business owners to help them become more successful. This could be general business advice, or it could be specialist advice like public speaking or leadership skills. Business coaches typically teach people one-to-one through a series of sessions. However, you may be able to teach groups of people through seminars and workshops. You can coach people in person or coach them via video call. Having a website will help you to get started.
Tour guide
You could educate people as a tour guide. This involves taking people on a tour while telling them various rehearsed facts along the way. Such a tour could be a tour of a museum or a historical building, or it could be a walking tour of a city. It could even be a coach tour or a boat tour. Work out what type of tour you would like to organise based on your interests. Love the supernatural? Why not host your own local ghost tour? Love the sea? Why not host a coastal safari tour?
Specialist consultant
Consultants are typically hired for one-off or ongoing advice on a specific subject. This could be something business-related like marketing or IT. Alternatively, it could be non-business related such as offering personal financial advice or helping people to follow a specific diet. You do not need qualifications to become a consultant, but having some relevant credentials could make you more trustworthy. You could provide consulting in person or virtually.
