Adulting. The stage where you wish and look forward to the finer things in life, and stability. Just like buying your own home, which is a dream come true. Except, homeownership also comes with the greater responsibility of managing a mortgage. This specific commitment can be a daunting aspect for anyone who just purchased a home.
Whether it’s a new property or a pre-owned one, it’s crucial to determine what your overall budget is to accommodate repayments. Ideally, the ultimate goal is to be able to pay off the mortgage and own your home as quickly as possible. If you ever found yourself in this position, here are the top 3 ways you can try to pay off your mortgage faster.
Budgeting is Key
When it comes to ANY financial situation, the main key to achieving financial independence is to plan accordingly based on an overall budget with a detailed account of all income, circumstances, and most of all, expenses. By determining the exact amount you have left over from all sources of income and after factoring in all expenses, you can then accurately allocate funds appropriately.
Without a good budget, it is next to impossible to keep track of finances and how you are spending your money. Your budget is the main factor to stabilize your financial position. Budgeting wisely will take a thorough breakdown of everything. Down to the last cent that you have spent. It is highly recommended to keep a notebook or a notepad to keep tabs on all expenses and have the ability to add unexpected purchases and such.
Direct Payments
Once you worked out your budget, you can arrange a payment plan with your accounting to have a portion of your income gets transferred straight into a loan account. This helps keep you on top of your payments and avoids any possible fees you can incur. It also helps with the temptation of spending the money on other things instead of remaining focused on your goals.
It is also a good thing to note that the faster you pay off your mortgage, the less interest you will have to pay over time. There is also the added advantage of being able to redraw your extra payments in the event of an emergency. The big plus of this approach is that you barely notice the money leaving once you get used to the method and the new incoming balance from your salary.
Consolidate Your Debts
When you are officially a homeowner, it is very important to consider consolidating all your debt into one single loan. Instead of having to manage multiple credit cards, bills, and other types of loans, opting for debt consolidation allows you to combine all of your balances in one place. Doing so allows you to focus on keeping up with one simple monthly payment.

June 9, 2022The only thing I would add to this is paying larger payments when you can. That really helps chunk it down.

June 9, 2022My husband and I don’t have any debt other than the house, so consolidation isn’t a concern for us. But we do similar to what you said and put aside the money for the bills first, then distribute the rest into a few savings accounts before having our spending money. Save (including extra towards loans) first, spend what’s left!
