As someone who loves tech and innovative devices, I can’t help but notice that there are a lot of inventions that feature gadgets which had been around way before my time. Somehow, there’s a demand and an appeal towards vintage related products. We went from being super excited about emails and surfing the internet, to falling back in love with snail mails, typewriters, and self-developing films taken with a Polaroid camera.
Personally, I have always been into arts and crafts. I love creating and tinkering with things. I also enjoy delving into projects that relate to renovating and restoring things. With that being said, I am also the type to take some time to find creative ways to preserve memories. Now that we have a toddler (and another one on the way), I’m more eager than ever to help them remember specific memories and milestones. I firmly believe they would absolutely appreciate the effort of preserving such moments that one day, they would enjoy looking back to.
My personal favorite, to be honest, is taking photographs and videos because you simply can’t replace how it highlights one’s emotion or reaction. This is why I am absolutely in love with the latest addition from Polaroid, The Polaroid Lab –it turns your digital smartphone photos into analog instant prints!!! The magic happens by transforming a digital photo into real Polaroid pictures using this innovative device. Believe it or not, it is NOT a printer, nor is it a scanner. It’s PURE MAGIC that uses an instant formula to deliver a timeless “vintage” like images. With this, you can turn those memories from your screen to a real physical copy! Basically, the Polaroid Lab simplifies and expedites transforming a digital smartphone photo into a handheld souvenir that can be shared with family and or friends.
Polaroid Lab
How does the MAGIC work?
There’s three lenses as well as multiple mirrors inside the Polaroid Lab device, which then take the image displayed on the screen of a smartphone. When the red button located in the base of the Polaroid Lab is triggered, the picture gets transferred to the instant film and ejected from the device. PRESTO!
The Polaroid Lab features an internal battery that’s rechargeable via Micro USB –which is a HUGE plus in my opinion. I have had a “polaroid type” printer in the past, and I find it annoying and costly to have to keep purchasing a battery just to continue using it. The process is quite straightforward; users are required to download the Polaroid Originals app on your Android or iOS smartphone. Once downloaded, the images can be selected and edited before converting it to its analog conversion.
The Nitty Gritty Details:
Compatible Film Polaroid: Originals i-Type and 600 film (Color, Black & White and Special Editions)
Compatible Smartphones: iPhone 6, 6s, 7, 8, X, Xs and newer, Most Android™ Smartphones
Lenses: Optical grade acrylic lenses, AR coated on top lens surface
Shutter System: Fixed aperture, variable speed shutter module (solenoid)
The App: Available for iOS and Android
Compatible iOS versions: iOS 11+
Compatible Android versions: Android 5+
For those of you who are quite technical with terms, I personally fall under the category of Millenials or Gen Y (born between 1980-1994). Crazy as it may sound, Polaroids had been around since the Baby Boomers (born between 1944-1964). This means polaroids had been around for 82 years already as it was founded in by Edwin Land in 1937. Our kids, however, fall under the newest generation group … Gen Alpha (born around 2010-2025). I can only imagine what kind of innovation would be around by the time they become teenagers and adults. One thing is for sure though, from doing my research I have discovered that developed polaroid photos take more than 100 years before it starts to fade if appropriately stored in an album made for polaroids.
The Polaroid Lab retails for $129.99 / EUR €129,99 / GBP £119. The films are available in the following variation:
- Polaroid – Color i-Type Film (Double Pack) – $29.99
