It’s always good to save money on utilities. Yet, with current prices higher than ever and expected to increase, there’s never been a better time to think about energy and water use.
Get Your Furnace or AC Serviced
Heating and cooling systems are excellent for climate control in your home. And they mostly do a great job. And while these will last a long time, they aren’t designed to last forever. Therefore, it’s best to schedule a service of either with an HVAC contractor. Otherwise, you could pay more to cool your home in summer or heat it in winter. An older HVAC or heating system of ten years or more could cost you 20% extra on your annual bill. Yet a well-functioning system will reduce your monthly bills, and you could get cashback or rebates from your energy provider.
Don’t Leave Electricals on Standby
We all have multiple electrical items in our homes. And like most, you probably leave things on standby for convenience. However, standby can use just as much energy as when your device is switched on and being used. Some of the main culprits include the TV, video game consoles, and computer equipment. The amount of energy a device uses typically depends on its age. There are laws governing standby use for new appliances. But older ones could be costing you money. So always entirely switch off or even unplug anything that doesn’t need to be on.
Save Money on Utilities with Replacements
Most devices were manufactured to lower power standards in the past. However, with power consumption in mind, new items are being made, thanks to public awareness and new regulations. Some replacements you can make to save money include the following:
- LED light bulbs
- Smart power strips
- Energy efficient white goods
Lighting is among the most used electrical components in homes. But many bulbs are highly inefficient. This is why the European Union has banned the manufacture and sale of older incandescent bulbs. You should also consider the efficiency rating of any appliances you buy.
Maintain a Comfortable Temperature
Heat waste contributes to increased energy bills. While most people agree that 72 degrees are the most comfortable temperature at home, you can save a lot by turning your heat down a couple of degrees. It varies by system and your home’s efficiency, but you could save around $100 per year, per degree. You should also be aware that turning your heating up to the highest setting doesn’t warm a room any quicker. But it does use much more energy. The trick is to find a comfortable temperature and stick with it. Even lower, you will soon get used to it.
Don’t Leave Water Running
Water is also classed as a type of energy and is a vital utility. Yet many people don’t realize just how much they waste. The average family home wastes over 10,000 gallons each year from leaking taps alone. And this directly equates to much higher water bills. Additionally, it negatively affects your own sustainability goals. Further, you can kill two birds with one stone by using water more efficiently for hygiene. For example, showering for a few minutes less will save money on water, electricity, or gas, depending on the shower you use.
Summary
It’s easier than you think to save money on utilities. Of course, it helps to have your HVAC system serviced. You can also replace certain items and be aware of your water usage.

July 30, 2022Oh, wow! I had no idea that items could use as much power when they’re on standby as they can when they’re actually on. Thank you!

July 30, 2022We switched to energy-efficient lights when we moved into our current house 7 years ago and it definitely helps! I’ve been trying to make sure we don’t keep extra things plugged in when we can. This summer, since we’ve had temperatures of 100+ since the beginning of June in SE Texas, we started leaving some of the blinds closed in rooms we aren’t in to help keep the house cooler so the ac isn’t running as much. It may not make a big difference in our electric bill, but it does keep the house feeling cooler throughout the day.

July 31, 2022Some of your pointers are way more than saving money. They are about creating a more sustainable way of life. I believe I can personally be more careful about using electricity and wasting water through faucets. Sometimes I become careless especially when in hurry. But I am trying to fix that
