Mirrors can play an important part in your home’s decor. While they’re useful for checking your reflection in, they can have other purposes too such as brightening a room up or adding the illusion of space. Below are just a few tips on how to successfully decorate your home with mirrors.
Add depth to small rooms with large mirrors
In tiny rooms, a well-placed large mirror can add the illusion of extra space. They can make the room feel as if it’s twice as big and stop it from feeling as cramped. In a small bathroom, consider a large wide square mirror above the sink as opposed to a tiny circular mirror. In a narrow hallway, consider a large full length mirror by the door instead of a small eye-level mirror.
Place mirrors opposite windows to reflect sunlight
Placing a mirror opposite a window can help to reflect the sunlight and disperse it around the room. This is a great way to make a room feel brighter and cheerier. A mirror opposite a window can also create the illusion of a second window – which, in a small room with a single window, can make the space feel much less claustrophobic.
Hang round mirrors over square furniture
There are times when you may want to consider the shape of a mirror. Contrasting rectangles and squares with ovals and circles is a great way to bring balance to your decor. This is particularly important to consider when hanging mirrors over furniture. A round mirror could be a good choice over a rectangular sideboard or very square sofa. Similarly, a rectangular or square mirror may look better when hung over a more rounded sofa.
Go multi-purpose with mirrored furniture
It’s possible to combine mirrors and furniture together. Items of furniture like a mirrored sideboard can bring a sense of sparkle to a living room and make it feel more luxurious. A mirrored coffee table could also help to reflect light. There are also times when mirrored furniture can have a practical purpose. A mirrored bathroom cabinet above the sink can allow you to look at your reflection while also providing storage space. You can also buy mirrored wardrobes for bedrooms that allow you to store away your clothes and also check out your outfits as you’re getting dressed (a great space-saving solution if you don’t have room for a separate wardrobe and full length mirror).
Embrace feng shui principles
Feng shui is a decorating practice that involves creating balance and harmony in a home. With mirrors, it’s important to avoid negative energy by not placing mirrors in places where you don’t want to constantly see your reflection. A few feng shui principles involving mirrors that support this include:
- Not hanging mirrors beside your bed (you shouldn’t be waking up to your reflection)
- Not hanging a mirror opposite your toilet (you don’t want to watch yourself while sitting on the toilet)
- Not hanging a mirror opposite a front door (perpendicular to a front door is much better)
- Not hanging a mirror opposite a desk (you don’t want to constantly looking at yourself as you work – a mirror beside your desk is better)
What do you think? DO you decorate with mirrors too? Do you have additional tips you can share?

October 18, 2024Thanks for sharing these tips about using mirrors for decoration. There is a mirror on the blank wall in the second-floor hallway of our house. I’m not sure if this goes against feng shui principles.

October 18, 2024I am a bit reluctant to decorate with mirrors but I see your point especially if the mirrors are used strategically as part of the decor they would add a lot. Great ideas.

October 18, 2024I like the idea of mixing up different shapes. I have seen a lot of mirrors that are round on the top, and I really like those. I’ll have to think about adding more mirrors to our spaces.
