We’ve all experienced it. We’ve gone to use something in the house to find that it has become damaged or stopped working somehow. Stressful. Expensive to deal with.
However, more often than not, a lot of these problems, breakages and repairs are a simple fix that can be done in just a few minutes, without having to wait for a professional to come and fix it for you, more expensively, and with a callout charge and tip added to it.
This is why we should all consider trying to learn some basic DIY to learn the difference between what we can do at home on our own versus when it’s time to call on the professionals to get the job done.
But what do you need to get started? Keep reading to find out more.
Get a Basic Toolkit
Every home should have one. Whether you want to hang pictures, or tighten loose screws, having the right equipment at home is necessary to get the job done.
A basic tool kit should include tools and the accessories needed to make them work. This should be:
- -A hammer
- -A Screwdriver (with multiple heads to fit different types of screw)
- -An adjustable wrench
- -Plyers
- -A spirit level
- – Nails
- -Screws
- -A tape measure
- -A pencil
There are, of course additional things you may need, but that basic toolkit will help to get you started.
Watch Online Tutorials
Whether it’s filling in a hole in the wall, unblocking the toilet or hanging a picture frame, it is highly likely that someone has done it before and has shared their knowledge how to do so with the world via video.
Just quickly search ‘how to fix……’ and there will be a whole host of instructional videos showing you how to get the job done safely and efficiently.
Get Small Parts For Appliances
Yes, even some appliances can be fixed by yourself if you have the right parts to do it. Do some research about what parts of your appliances typically need replacing to make them wok properly and have them on hand. Make sure that they are the proper parts needed for your brand and model of appliance- like the Frigidaire parts available here.
Having these parts available will not only mean you can think about making the attempt to repair them yourself, but also keep costs down if you choose to hire a professional to make the repairs for you.
Know When To Call Professionals
While there are certain things that can and should be done by ourselves- particularly during the pandemic, there are certain other things that are much better off by being done by a trained professional.
For example, if something seems way more complicated to repair than you may have thought before, chances are that you don’t have the right training to get the job done.
There’s no shame in calling in the experts to do repairs on your home. It may be better to call them before you make too much of a mess of things yourself!

March 2, 2021I’m a single mom so I try to DIY as much as I can. Can’t say I always do a great job but it gets done. And as you said, I know when to call in the professionals when it’s out of my depth. Especially if I know it could lead to something much worse!
