How to Maximize and Rebuild Your Closet Space with California Closets

Thank you California Closets for sponsoring this post.

Does your closet look like a tornado hit it? Do you find yourself constantly organizing, but never finding a layout that works for you? Take a deep breath. While it can be frustrating to try and tackle an overflowing closet, there are tips to help you maximize your closet. Let’s take a closer look on what I learned from California Closets. My design consultant Jessica is an absolute sweetheart and made sure my husband and I are very happy with everything.

Invest in California Closets
One of the main reasons you can’t stay organized is that your current closet doesn’t work for you. Instead of trying to make it work, why not invest in a closet system that gives you exactly what you need? You can custom design a closet that will have storage solutions for the things YOU need to store. With California Closets, you’ll meet with a designer that will help you create a closet. They will then show you the closet in a 3D model, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. The system will then be built to spec and assembled in your home by professional installers.

Purge, Purge, Purge – The KonMari Method
The very first thing you want to do is clear everything out of your closet. You want to start fresh. You will literally be amazed at how much can come out of your closet. Chances are you won’t even be able to see your bed. Next, go through each item and sort it into one of four piles: Keep, Toss, Donate, and Mend. Anything that goes in the Mend pile needs to be addressed immediately. Give yourself a timeframe for getting it done. All the items in the Donate pile should be bagged and taken to your donation center of choice on your next trip out. Don’t leave it in your car for months and months. Toss all your trash, and you should be left with a much more manageable pile.

Organize into Groups
Now you need to think about organizing everything into groups. When everything is organized, it’s easier to find. You can then arrange the groups into a layout that makes sense. For example, you might group the groups of jeans, dress pants, and leggings into one area.

Make Items Easier to Store
Another great tip is to make your items easier to store. For example, place your shoes in clear shoe boxes. This way you can stack them, but also still see what’s inside. You can even corral jewelry into slotted containers you can find at the Dollar Tree.

Vacuum Seal
If you keep bulky items in your closet, vacuum seal those items so that they take up less space in your wardrobe. For example, if you keep bedding in your closet, vacuum seal the comforters. If it’s warm weather, you can also vacuum seal winter coats, sweaters, and other bulky clothing.

I’ve done quite a lot of clear outs this year, so much so that I have about 3 boxes full of stuff to add to eBay, oops. I have all of my clothes separated on different coloured hangers so I know what they are like tshirt dresses, shirts, vests, tshirt, going out tops etc and I really feel like it helps keep it organised x

I need to purge BUT I seem to buy faster than I purge. I am a fan of those vacuum sealed bags though. They really help make much needed space in our closets.

  • Sounds like a great system. I’d love to see photos of how your closet turned out using this.
